What is the 24-hour rule for waxing?

At Gameela Skin in North Scottsdale, we follow the 24-hour rule: avoid hot showers, saunas, workouts, and sun exposure for at least 24 hours after your wax. This downtime helps prevent irritation, like ingrown hairs, and keeps your skin calm, happy, and beautifully smooth. Think of it as the perfect excuse to relax and pamper yourself after your waxing appointment.

How long does waxing last?

Waxing results typically last anywhere between 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle. Booking routine wax treatments at our salon helps slow regrowth over time. I typically recommend my clients book wax treatments about every 4 weeks. 

How long does my hair need to be for waxing?

For the most effective wax results, your hair should be *about* 1/4 inch long (about the length of a grain of rice). This allows our Satin Smooth wax to grip the hair properly for a smoother finish. If the hair is shorter than the recommended length, it will be difficult to remove. 

For Brazilian waxing, we recommend allowing 10-14 days of hair growth before booking your wax treatment with Gameela Skin.

Does waxing cause hair to grow back thicker?

No, waxing does not cause hair to grow back thicker! This is a common myth I hear quite often. Over time, waxing can weaken hair follicles, leading to finer and sparser hair regrowth.

While there isn’t a ton of prep required, following these tips will help ensure the best waxing experience and smooth skin:

• Exfoliate before waxing the area 24–48 hours before your wax appointment to remove dead skin cells and help prevent ingrown hairs.

• Avoid moisturizers or oils on the area being waxed, as this can irritate the skin.

• Grow Your Hair Out. For optimal results, let your hair grow for a minimum of two weeks after shaving. Two weeks is good, three weeks is better, and four weeks is ideal. Avoid trimming if possible, but if necessary, use an electric trimmer with a guard to prevent cutting the hair too short, which can make your first wax uneven. Hair should be about ¼ inch long before your appointment.

• Dress for Comfort. Wear loose-fitting clothing, like sweats or a dress, to make your appointment more comfortable and to avoid friction on freshly waxed skin.

Following these simple steps will make your waxing experience smoother, more comfortable, and leave your skin looking and feeling its absolute best.

Side effects of waxing

It’s completely normal to experience some redness or sensitivity after your wax - especially within the first 24 hours. Since every skin type is unique, side effects may vary, but the most common ones include slight skin irritation and the occasional ingrown hair. If you have sensitive skin, you might notice a bit more redness, but don’t worry, it fades quickly. 

Ingrown hairs can sometimes occur because waxing disrupts the hair lining, causing new growth to get trapped under the skin. This is why I recommend avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat for at least 24 to 48 hours following your wax appointment.
