Men's Skincare Myths

Let’s get one thing straight: Skincare is NOT just for women. If you’ve been following Gameela Skin for a while, you’ve probably noticed that we love seeing more and more men step up their skincare game! Until recently, a lot of men thought services such as facials, waxing, and even pedicures were just for women… WRONG. Yes, these self-care treatments might be considered “pampering yourself”, but they also do their job in keeping your skin looking and feeling its best.

We are so thankful to have a growing base of male clientele over the years and we hope this trend continues as men learn more and more about skincare. On that note, for those of you who might still be using body wash to cleanse your face (you know who you are) or sneaking your wife’s products as your own, we’ve got a few myths to bust and tips to share regarding men’s skincare!

Myth #1: The Skin on your Face and Body are the same

False. The skin on your face and the skin on your body are not the same and the two should be treated differently. Not only does the skin on your face produce much more oil, but it’s also thinner which causes it to age much more quickly than the rest of your body. It is for this reason that there are cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, etc. that are made specifically for the face and for the body.

Body wash products that you typically use on a loofa to cleanse your body in the shower are usually too drying to use on the face. Using body wash on the face could cause breakouts, irritation, and flakiness (especially if your skin is more sensitive).

We recommend speaking to our esthetician to help you select a face wash and moisturizer to fit your skin type! You can browse our selection of skincare products online!

Myth #2: Facials are only for Women

False. Facials are for men AND women! Us gals may enjoy spending way more time at the spa than men, but that does not mean facials are only beneficial for women. There are so many positive benefits for men to gain from a facial and we’re here to give you allll the deets.

  • Did you know facials can help tone the muscles in your face? Men might not say it out loud - but we know you don’t prefer saggy skin to younger, tighter looking skin. Facials are an important part of keeping your skin more youthful-looking and highlighting your distinct facial features.

  • Facials relieve stress!! The last year has put a lot of stress on all of us. If you don’t take time to deal with the stressors in your life, it can take a serious toll on both your mental health and the health of your skin. By spending just a little bit of time on facial care every month, you can reduce the muscle tension that you hold in your face on a daily basis. Not to mention, spending an hour getting a facial every 30-60 days will leave your skin and your mind feeling more refreshed to handle life’s day to day curveballs.

  • Saving the best for last, facials help keep your skin in tip-top shape. Cleansing and exfoliating is not just for women. In order to keep your skin glowing and youthful - you need to produce new cells and getting a facial helps speed along this process.

During a typical facial treatment at Gameela Skin, we’ll cleanse the skin, perform extractions to clean out your pores, exfoliate the skin, and infuse the skin with nourishing ingredients to help strengthen and restore your skin’s barrier function. Your treatment and the selected products we will use will be 100% customized to your skin type and any concerns you might have. Our goal is to leave you feeling confident, healthy, and refreshed.

Myth #3: Men age better than Women

False - Although it comes with a twist. Although it may sometimes feel like men age better than women, they do not. We will say that men typically do postpone the aging process just slightly due to their thicker and oiler skin - but when it does occur, it happens quickly. Men actually develop those deeper wrinkles much more quickly than women.

Because of this, it’s just as important for men to take care of their skin as it is for women. Adding in daily preventative measures such as wearing SPF, adapting to a regular skincare routine, getting monthly facials, etc. will help prolong signs of aging.

For SPF or other skincare products, head to our online shop!

We could go on and on about the many skincare myths out there for men, but we’ll stop here for now. The bottom line is, skincare whether it be products, facials, waxing, pampering, etc. is for both men AND women. Just because the Old Spice packaging is black and says “MEN” on it, doesn’t mean you have to use it. Branch out from the typical brands you see at Target or Walgreens and ask your local esthetician for advice! At Gameela Skin, we welcome men and women with open arms and are here ready to help you on your skincare journey!
